Our Story

The Ladies of SCI began as a group of ladies with loved ones incarcerated at Stanley Correctional Institution. As loved ones, we could no longer accept how the WI DOC has mislead the public, and our legislators, regarding the conditions of our prisons and the reasons for the poor conditions.  Wisconsin prison have a population crisis which has caused a staffing problem. The deteriorating conditions are due to over crowding, excessive sentencing, lack of drug treatment, lack of mental health services, lack of programming, lack of proper reentry services, poor revocation policies, and truth in sentencing.  In place of evidence-based practices proven to reduce recidivism, the WI DOC uses punitive and arbitrary punishments to lock people down in cells, and suspend the little programming or help that is available.  The problem isn't short staffing or underpaid employees, the problem is the poor decisions Wisconsin has made under several administrations, and nothing has been done to fix it.  Our mission is to spread awareness to people in our communities and to our legislators; exposing the grim truths, and advocating for change with innovative solutions.
